George Benson was only 21 when, on May 1, 1964, he recorded his first album as a leader, The New Boss Guitar of George Benson. At that point, the guitarist had yet to become a huge name in jazz, although many of those who knew him for his work with Jack McDuff's group (which he joined in 1962) agreed that he showed great potential. Benson still had some growing to do in 1964, but even so, this is an impressive debut.

George Benson (born March 22, 1943) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He began his professional career at the age of 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt. A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing, and scat singing. The New Boss Guitar of George Benson is the debut studio album by American jazz/soul guitarist George Benson. All tracks written by George Benson, except where noted. George Benson – guitar. Jack McDuff – piano, organ. Red Holloway – tenor saxophone. Ronnie Boykins – bass (tracks 1-7). Montego Joe – drums (tracks 1-7)

Track 8 recorded on May 14, 1964 in New York and previously released on Joe Dukes and Jack McDuff LP "The Soulful Drums" (Prestige 7324). Track 8 is a bonus track. Riverside Records (P)&(C) 1990, Fantasy, Inc. Made in the EU.
