Information on Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Carré (Square) for four orchestras and four choirs (1959–60) is a composition by the German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, and is Work Number 10 in the composer's catalog of works. Carré was commissioned by the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in Hamburg. The essential ideas occurred to Stockhausen in November–December 1958 while on a tour of the United States where, during hours spent each day flying from one location to another, he experienced the slowest temporal rates of change of his life.

Carré for 4 orchestras and 4 choirs (1958/59) recorded and produced by Norddeutscher Rundfunk Hamburg, October 1960. Grand prix du disque.

Gruppen was composed for three orchestral groups; Carré for four orchestral & vocal groups. Note: again a warning in EAC’s log which seems to be unnecessary. Stockhausen was long based in Koln (Cologne), and "Gruppen" was commissioned by, first performed by, and first recorded by the WDR, so clearly this is the most authoritative orchestra to perform the legendary work. WDR stands for Westdeutscher Rundfunk, or West German Radio. "Gruppen (Groups) for 3 orchestras" (1955-57 - 24'30) is written for an orchestra of 108 players, divided into three groups of 36.
